Augusta, N.J. – Kris Sanchez was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI as the Skyhawks defeated the visiting Worcester Tornadoes 8-5 in the series opener of a three-game set at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park on Monday night. The slugging first baseman launched his team-high 15th home run of the season to right-center field in the bottom of the first to bring three runs home and give the Skyhawks a lead they would never relinquish. With the win, Sussex leapfrogs Worcester into fourth place overall in the Can-Am League standings.

The Skyhawks had to come from behind after Tornadoes first baseman Chris Colabello belted a solo home run to straightaway center field in the top of the first. The home team answered immediately with Sanchez’s dinger off of right-hander Matt Giusti (2-8) in the bottom half, however, and then added one run in the second and two more in the third to open up a 6-1 advantage.

But Sussex southpaw Jeff Icenogle (5-5) was not able to put Worcester away as the visitors scored in each of the next three frames to draw within one run of the Skyhawks. Nick Salotti hit a solo home run in the fourth, Alex Trezza scored from third base on a wild pitch by Icenogle in the fifth, and Stantrel Smith and Trezza tallied RBI base hits in the sixth to make it 6-5. Skyhawks right-handed reliever Kevin Gunter stopped the bleeding with two out and the tying run on base in the sixth, striking out Boomer Blanchard to end the half-inning.

Gunter would stymie the Tornadoes offense for another two innings, allowing the Skyhawks offense to add insurance runs in the home halves of the sixth and seventh. Carl Loadenthal drove in Joe Persichina with a double over Ryan Crespi’s head in left field in the sixth, and Anthony Sosnoskie brought home Kris Sanchez with a single in the seventh. Sosnoskie finished the evening 3-for-4 and registered the first two RBI of his professional career.

Right-handed closer Duaner Sanchez entered in the top of the ninth and retired three Tornadoes in a row after a leadoff single by Blanchard to record his 16th save of the season.

The Skyhawks (8-20 second half, 33-41 overall) and Tornadoes (14-14, 33-42) continue their series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Skylands Park. Right-hander Tim Stringer (3-5, 6.17) starts for Sussex against right-hander Zach Zuercher (3-2, 5.33) of Worcester. Game Recap – Game #73, 8-15 vs. Quebec (L 10-7)

16 08 2010

Augusta, N.J. – Four Skyhawks registered two hits, but an early 7-0 deficit was too much for the home team to overcome as they dropped the final game of a four-game series with the Quebec Capitales at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park. Sussex drew within one run on two separate occasions but fell 10-7 in a contest that included a 44-minute rain delay in the seventh inning.

Quebec jumped all over Skyhawks right-hander Jusef Frias (1-5) in the first and second innings, tallying three runs in each frame with the help of a combined four hits, three walks, two errors and two wild pitches. Right-hander Matt Salvato pitched a scoreless third inning but allowed a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Mike Thompson to make it 7-0 Quebec.

The Skyhawks finally got to Capitales right-handed starter Karl Gelinas in the bottom of the fourth inning, batting around and scoring five times thanks to RBI hits by Nick Giarraputo, Kraig Binick, Joe Persichina and Carl Loadenthal. Another run-scoring single from Persichina in the fifth off of right-handed reliever Brendon Malkowski (1-0) brought the score to 7-6.

Sussex could not finish the comeback, however, as the visitors added a run in the sixth with the help of back-to-back doubles by Pierre-Luc LaForest and Thompson. Giarraputo’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame closed the gap to 8-7, but a pair of Quebec runs in the eighth gave Capitales left-handed closer Andrew Albers enough room to lock down his 14th save of the year.

The Skyhawks (7-20 second half, 32-41 overall) continue their seven-game homestand when they take on the visiting Worcester Tornadoes in the first game of a three-game set on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Jeff Icenogle (4-5, 5.20) opposes fellow southpaw Zach Zuercher (3-2, 5.33) in the series opener.
